The jump from passionate homebrewer to licensed commercial brewery is one that thousands of Americans attempt every year—and the ones who do it successfully almost always say the same thing: they wish they'd known more about equipment before they spent the money.
This isn't a gear-lust fantasy piece about shiny conicals and custom tap handles. This is the practical, sometimes uncomfortable checklist you need before you sign a lease, apply for a TTB Brewer's Notice, or put a deposit down on a used 3-barrel system.
First, an Honest Assessment of What You're Really Starting With
Most homebrewers dramatically overestimate how much of their current setup translates to commercial production—and dramatically underestimate the regulatory gap between the two.
At home, you're brewing for yourself. The FDA, TTB, and your state's liquor control board have essentially zero visibility into your process. The moment you apply for a commercial brewer's license, all of that changes. What Almost Always Needs to Be Replaced

Plastic fermenters and non-food-grade components. Commercial inspectors will flag plastic fermenters, vinyl tubing that's been used extensively, and any components that can't be demonstrated as food-safe and properly sanitizable. Budget for stainless or commercial-grade alternatives.
